It is the only listed monument of national value (category A) in Azuga.
About the place
The cemetery is on the DN1, about 1 km north of the centre, towards Predeal. It was laid out in 1920 on about 2,000 square metres and has 160 military crosses and three wooden wayside crosses. The national list of historic monuments places it in category A, of national value, under code PH-IV-a-A-16881.
From 9 to 25 October 1916 the Prahova Valley saw the Battle of Predeal, one of the hardest fights of the Romanian army in the First World War, with front lines on the Clăbucetul Taurului and Clăbucetul Azugii heights above the town. In the town's central park, the Heroes' Monument carved by Ioan Iordănescu in 1937 honours the local men who fought in the war of 1916–1919.
Good to know
- The cemetery is right by the DN1, which carries heavy traffic; stop only where you can park safely.
- The Heroes' Monument in the central park has two bronze groups, one of them showing Ecaterina Teodoroiu, and can be seen at any time, free of charge.
- The visit is short, so you can combine it with the Holy Trinity Church, about 1 km towards the centre.
