It holds 4.4 on Google from 500 reviews, and the producer says more than 15,000 visitors a year take the cellar tour.
About the place
The cellars are on Independenței Street, about 600 metres from the town hall, in a 2-hectare park. They were built in 1892 by Wilhelm Rhein, who helped develop the area at the request of King Carol I. They stand above ground, with double walls about 1.5 metres thick around an air cushion, so the temperature stays naturally between 5 and 14 °C all year. The producer says it is the oldest place in Romania where sparkling wine has been made without a break by the traditional method, with fermentation in the bottle.
The house became a supplier to the Royal Court in 1904 and regained that status in 2020. Rhein Extra was served at King Ferdinand's coronation in Alba Iulia on 15 October 1922. The tour shows how sparkling wine is made by the traditional method, includes the museum and ends with a tasting. Today the cellars belong to the Alexandrion group.
