About the place

The castle was built on the site of an old hunting lodge to plans by the architect Grigore Cerchez, for Prince Gheorghe Grigore Cantacuzino, nicknamed 'the Nabob', twice mayor of Bucharest and prime minister. It was the family's summer home until 1930, was nationalised in 1948 and then served as a sanatorium. After 1989 it returned to the family's heirs, and it has been open to the public since 2010.

Inside are Murano glass windows, stone fireplaces, oak coffered ceilings and Carrara marble staircases. The ballroom holds a collection of 27 coats of arms of related noble families, and a gallery has 12 life-size portraits painted on Cordoba leather. The park has artesian fountains, an artificial grotto and a hunting tower. In 2022 the castle appeared as Nevermore Academy in the Netflix series 'Wednesday'.
