It is a listed monument of national value, holds 4.9 on Google from more than 2,900 reviews and has held a Guinness record as the highest summit cross since 2013.
About the place
The cross stands on the edge of Caraiman, above Valea Seacă, within the town of Bușteni. It is 39.3 m tall in all: a 7.9 m base and the steel cross itself, 31.4 m high, with arms of 7 m each. It was built between 1924 and 1928 by the bridge department of the Romanian Railways (CFR), in memory of about 30,000 Romanian soldiers who fell in the fighting in the Prahova Valley in the First World War.
The cross has lighting, with lamps facing the Prahova Valley. It was restored in 1965–1967 and in 2017–2021. It can only be reached on foot: from Babele, where the cable car from Bușteni arrives, the path across the plateau takes about an hour and a half, and from Bușteni up the Jepii Mici valley about 4 to 4.5 hours.
Good to know
- The Jepii Mici trail is closed in winter; climb it only in summer, with boots and mountain gear.
- If you go up by cable car, remember that the last cabin down from Babele leaves at 16:00.
- Weather on the plateau changes fast; check the forecast and take warm clothes even in summer.
